An enduring icon of the house, the Hermès Birkin was created in the 1980s following a chance encounter between Jane Birkin and Hermès chairman Jean-Louis Dumas. The Birkin 35 is the original and perhaps most recognisable proportion of the design, combining its distinctive trapezoidal silhouette with two rolled top handles, sangles and central turn-lock closure.

Crafted in richly grained Togo calfskin in Hermès’ classic Gold colourway, this example is finished with contrasting white saddle stitching and cool-toned palladium-plated hardware. The supple Retourne construction gives the bag a softer profile while retaining the instantly recognisable Birkin silhouette.

The interior is finished in tonal leather and features the traditional Hermès pocket arrangement, including a zipped compartment. Protective feet complete the base.

Condition

Great condition.

There is visible wear consistent with age and use, most notably rubbing and colour loss to the lower corners on all four edges and piping, with areas of scuffing visible particularly around the base corners (see photos).

There are light scratches, marks and signs of use to the palladium-plated hardware, including the turn-lock plate and protective feet.

The interior appears clean and well presented overall, with only light signs of use.

Bought from the Hermès boutique on Sloane Street. Comes with a LegitGrails certificate of authenticity.

The Hermès blind stamp visible beneath the sangle appears to be a G within a square.

Under the commonly used interpretation of Hermès date stamps, a square G corresponds to 2003.
